While scanning this morning’s MedPage Today newsletter I came across this ARTICLE which shares a new conclusion drawn from the Strategic Timing of Antiretroviral Treatment Trial (START Trial), which began in 2009 and was recently completed. The gist of this update is that patients fare better if they begin Antiretroviral Treatment (ART) immediately upon diagnosis of HIV infection regardless of their CD4 cell counts. This study implies that patients with CD4 cell counts in the normal range above 500 benefit from starting ART right away and before lowered CD4 counts or symptoms of illness. Meaning, that any patient who has a PCR test that shows positive for HIV should begin immediate treatment with a daily “cocktail” of ART pharmaceuticals.
Side note: The following pharmaceutical companies are listed collaborators on this study: Abbott, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Gilead Sciences, GlaxoSmithKline, Merck, Sharp & Dohme LLC and Tibotec Pharmaceutical Limited
As I looked through the MedPage article AND the study itself I noticed the glaring absence of any mention of any specifically named drugs that were included in this study. I wondered because I recently discovered that one of the drugs being used to treat HIV today is the conveniently renamed and rebranded AZT. The very same highly controversial and arguably unsafe AZT that was used as treatment back in the 80s and 90s. Look for it now by its new name Retrovir (or ZDV short for Zidovudine) manufactured by our friends at GlaxoSmithKline. Yea, the same GSK that funded this study. It appears that for this START Trial they simply referred to ANY treatment with ANY of the approved antiretroviral drugs. Since they weren’t listing the drugs here in the study, I hit the internet in search of the specific drugs licensed for ART in the United States. I typed “HIV ART licensed drugs” into my Brave browser and here are the first few results and what I saw when I clicked.
FDA-Approved HIVMedicines HIV INFO-NIH : “This Page Isn’t Working” error message
WHO Treatment and Care : “This Page Cannot Be Found” error message
Antiretroviral Discovery and Drug Development NIH National Institutes of Health : this page works but there is not a list of the specific drugs here either.
I clicked on all the other links that came up in the result and literally none of them named the drugs except this WedMD page.
Now that Nevada has a new law where every single person age 13 and over is offered an HIV test at every single encounter with every single healthcare provider (emergency or routine care) it’s important that you understand the motivation for this testing. PCR test will find lots of HIV. And every single positive test is a cash cow for the pharmaceutical companies making the ART drug cocktails. Which is where another new law comes into play. Pharmacists in Nevada can now dispense these drugs directly to their customers without a doctor involved.
